Viewing Grant Proposal: Utopian Power_Solar Development

Utopian Power LLC is a Michigan based small business focused on renewable energy development. Solar development is a multi-year process in which land must be identified, negotiated, and lease terms agreed upon. Once land control is secured the systems must be designed and submitted into interconnection studies with the corresponding utility or grid operator. Our project will focus on early stage development to support the cleaning of the energy grid and protection of our natural resources.

I have had the pleasure of working with Utopian Power and I have been very impressed with how they approach their work and in particularly with how they develop solar development projects. They understand the importance of working with the parties that are directly a part of the development process. But they also understand how important it is to work with members of the local community from where the project will be located. GLREA strongly supports the development of solar development projects. But we also believe it is vital that solar developers build a trusting relationship with local community members during the process of putting together a project, particularly the early stages. For these reasons GLREA supports this proposal. Thank you for the opportunity to submit these comments.

This proposal aligns with the State of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has released the State of Michigan’s Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP) which builds from Michigan’s MI Healthy Climate Plan, the state’s strategy for reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 and reducing emissions by 50-52% relative to 2005 by 2030. Specifically this project matches directly with ID No. 1: Energy Generation To drive clean energy deployment including improving siting for renewable energy and energy storage across Michigan, including on brownfields and former industrial sites and emphasizing equitable access for Michigan’s low income and disadvantaged communities (LIDAC). Utopian Power's project will be an example of how the State can support solar develop on Brownfield properties to protect natural resources.
